Female Black Teenager Is New Iron Man

The character, called Riri Williams, is described as a science genius who builds her own Iron Man suit in her dorm at MIT.

Marvel have revealed that a black female teenager will be the new Iron Man.

Writer Brian Michael Bendis told Time that Tony Stark will step away from his superhero alter-ego and a new character called Riri Williams will assume the role.

Bendis described Williams as a science genius who enrolled in MIT aged 15.
She comes to Stark's attention when she builds her own Iron Man suit in her dorm.

"We're in the middle of a very big Tony Stark storyline - actually three storylines converging," said Bendis.
"His best friend died, his company is collapsing and he's finding out who his biological parents were all at the same time. How that all shakes out such that Tony is no longer in the armour?
"You'll have to wait to find out for the end of Civil War II. But it does create a path for Riri Williams, who Tony will know and will be interacting with very shortly in the comics."

Robert Downey Jr became Hollywood's highest paid actor after playing Tony Stark in the Marvel films.

Marvel has revealed several diverse characters in recent years with long-running superhero mantles, including a biracial Spider-Man, Muslim Ms Marvel, female Thor, African-American Captain America and Asian-American Hulk.

However, those characters have yet to appear in Marvel film or TV adaptations.
Williams will make her debut in the Invincible Iron Man comic book due out later this year.
